Cyber Safety: Well—Who Can You Trust?
This will be a big week for IT people who understand the pros and the cons of our current computer cyber safety needs. Mark Zuckerberg will go before Congress to answer questions about information harvested by Cambridge Analytica, and consumers will learn if they were included in the data grab.
‘How does that affect me?’, you may ask. If you use a computer in today’s world, all this stuff affects you either sooner or later. I am not overstating it at all when I tell you that really bad guys are trying all the time to hack your accounts so they can steal your money, and they work very hard at it.
Here is today’s best example. There are these cute little nostalgic questions/quizzes all over social media now. They ask, ‘What was your first concert?’, and ‘Which car did you learn to drive a stick shift on?’ Not coincidentally, these are often the same ‘security questions’ you are asked when you set up an account. Think about it. You’ve also seen recently the question asking you if you remember the name of your first grade teacher. This is another favorite security question. And how about ‘Do you remember the name of the street you grew up on?’ By now you are probably scrambling to remember which key accounts you have where you have used these same questions as the secure login for when you forget your password. Why would anyone ask these seemingly random questions on Facebook? Is there a prize? Why ask any of this private, personal, and specific-to-you information on social media?
